Captured above are some of the memorable moments from our 2008 field season in Hawaii. Although this year our time on the water was limited due to ongoing research analyses and publication projects, the days that we did have were fantastic.
In 2008, we continued our investigation into the function of humpback songs by initiating the second phase of playback experiments directed toward male singers, and we began a new study examining behavioral interactions between individual humpbacks from the air. Teaming up with Michael Kelem, cinematographer for Planet Earth, and the Cineflex camera used in this popular series, we were able to break exciting new ground in our research into the social lives of humpback whales in Maui.
Whale Trust
Bridging Marine Research with
Marine Education & Conservation

Whale Trust was formed in 2001 to support field research on whales and their marine environment. Its founders are passionate scientists and explorers who believe that science-the quest for answers to the most intriguing questions about our natural world--lies at the heart of environmental education and conservation.
But Whale Trust seeks to do more than fund groundbreaking field research on our earth's largest marine mammals. Results from Whale Trust's field research are the basis for a broader program of outreach and education that involve the public, educators and a new generation of researchers whom Whale Trust hopes to inspire.
Spotlight: Highlights from the 2008 Whale Quest Kapalua
No living animals have captured our imaginations as have the great
whales . . . They fire our imaginations and stab at our emotions. They
inspire our art, literature, and music. And so they should. The indescribable
blend of grace, power, and beauty of a whale as it glides underwater, leaps
towards the sky, or simply lifts its flukes and slides into the sea
symbolizes a vanishing poetry of the wild.
